Lynch, J.R,(2004) When Anger Scares Yo, California: New Harbinger
Publications
This book is concerned with
getting over fear of conflict and finding healthy ways to express
anger. Primarily of interest to anger avoiders who have more difficulty
connecting with their anger, distinguishing them from “exploders”
who have more difficulty containing it. Lynch distinguishes between
anger which he sees as a constructive energy and rage which he sees
as violence annihilating the opposition. I am not sure I agree with
this construction but his discussion of threat and non-violent response
is powerful. This book offers many case studies which illustrate how
those frightened of their anger and conflict have overcome their fears
and found healthy ways to engage. Besides promoting emotional literacy,
much of the book is devoted to understanding how people become anger
avoiders and how they can overcome self limiting beliefs that prevent
them from accessing and utilising the positive energy of anger. The
great strength of the book is in the stories and practical guidance
and there is a useful discussion of anger and gender difference. A
worthwhile read for anger avoiders and those who work with them.
