Book Review

The Mediator’s Handbook (1997) Beer, J.E. & Stief, E. Canada: New Society Publishers

This book has been developed by the Friends Conflict Resolution Programs building from their first edition in 1982 probably the first “how-to” of mediation. The detail and the clarity with which the processes and steps of mediation are presented reflect the depth of experience in facilitating the mediation process in diverse settings. It is a true handbook, offering detailed guidance for facilitators in relation to each stage of their mediation model in terms of process goals and outcomes and pitfalls to be avoided. It offers a conceptual framework for understanding conflict and mediation and excellent advice on the range of interpersonal skills needed to support the people, control the process and help parties to the conflict solve their problems. The book is illustrated by many excellent examples of the kinds of challenges and difficulties likely to be encountered during mediation together with suggestions as to how these might be handled. The book will provide clear direction to those needing to help mediate in an informal way but warns that the skills outlined may take years to perfect even with professional training. For those new to the field this is an excellent place to start and an ongoing tool for refining and improving practise.
