The Dreambody in Relationships, (1987)  Mindell, A., Penguin Arkana

This gem of a book, now 20 years old, brings together ideas and practice from family therapy, dreamwork, bodywork and communication theory for lay people as well as therapists.  Readers will recognise the debt the series of articles on unconscious/ unintended communication, which he calls 'dreambody language', owe to this work.  He likens it to speaking two languages at once - the primary one being so powerful that it "it apparently hypnotises those who listen to it, obliterating their awareness of the unintended dreamlike communication process".  

The book shows us how to follow and unfold the meaning of unintended communication.  It encourages us to follow the process of what is happening and what is trying to happen as against trying to bring about something that 'should' be happening.  Moreover he sees such communication as a channel through which the wider field of culture and global process expresses itself e.g. it is an expression of group or organisational life as well as personal or interpersonal dynamics.  It offers a more in-depth into communication structures, channels and signals, edges, typical relationship processes.  While the book is not for beginners is very readable and is very worthwhile for anybody who wants to work at the transformative end of approaches to conflict and relationship work.
